CCTV Code of Practice

The content of both the Model Code of Practice is slanted towards the ownership and management of a ‘public area CCTV System’. However it is a requirement under the Data Protection Act 1998 (see www.ico.gov.uk) that all Systems (accept those within domestic premises and small systems comprising a few fixed view cameras, un-monitored and whose recordings will only be viewed by the Police in the event of an incident eg small shop) should be regulated by a Code of Practice and operated in accordance with formal Model Procedures. Both documents are therefore designed to be easily adapted to suit any operation.

The model prepared by members of the The CCTV User Group is the most widely used throughout the UK but in the event of any part being deemed inapplicable, it’s exclusion should be carefully considered, taking into account the need to safeguard the integrity and credibility of the system and the overriding need to safeguard personal privacy.
